Prices
The average CIF price of fresh bluefin imported by Japan in March was JPY 1,712/kg, up 2% on that of February but down 22% on that of March 2012. During the first three months, the average was JPY 1,711, down 11% on that of the same period last year.

In April, they presented 792 pieces of domestic fresh bluefin in Tsukiji. Imports amounted to 1,776 from Mexico, 199 from Spain and 400 from Australia. In the first four months of the year, volumes registered 2,856, 6,695, 520 and 400 pieces respectively. Japan, Spain and Australia are still at similar levels to those of the previous easy; however, incoming volumes of Mexican farmed bluefin were up almost sixfold on those of the previous year.
Markets
During March, about 575 tonnes of fresh bluefin were imported, worth JPY 899 million at Japan Customs.
This figure is up 14% in volume and 16% in value on those registered during the previous month. Compared with March 2012, imports grew 119% in volume and 70% in value.

During the first three months of the year, imports reached 1,358 tonnes worth JPY 2,324 million, up 111% in volume and 88% in value on those of the same period in 2012.

The main origin of Japanese imports of northern bluefin (Thunnus thynnus and/or Thunnus orientales) in January-March was Mexico with 949 tonnes and JPY 1,506 million, followed by Spain with 126 tonnes and JPY 421 million.

The main supplier of southern bluefin was Indonesia, with 114 tonnes worth JPY 125 million.
