(SPAIN, 7/31/2012)
Grupo Consorcio, consistent with its determined support of the environment and sustainable fishing, expands its offer of products certified with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) ecolabel.
Grupo Consorcio has become one of the first Spanish canning industries to use anchovies captured in a fishery with a certification of sustainability that fulfils the requirements of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

Such step proves the commitment of the canning company from Santoña, Cantabria, with fishing methods that are respectful to the environment and favour sustainability.
The anchovy fishery, located in Area FAO 41, received the MSC certification in August 2011 for the species Engraulis Anchoita, which has become the only species of anchovy awarded with such certification in the World.

After the maturation period, MSC anchovies are ready to be processed and packed. Grupo Consorcio offers two presentations: glass jars and cans.
Leading the way in obtaining the certification, Grupo Consorcio is one of Spain’s pioneering companies in the support of sustainable fishing techniques. It already has been awarded with a certification to process MSC Albacore (White Tuna) and, today, it adds anchovies to the list of raw materials authorised to display the MSC ecolabel.

The main reasons for the pursuit of the MSC certification for anchovies are the company’s determination to safeguard the sustainability of the species and to reassure consumers of the fact that the product they are acquiring is fully traceable. Grupo Consorcio proves, with this label, that it is a company committed with the support of a type of fishing ambitioning the continuity and perpetuation of the species.
