KOCHI - Indian seafood export is all set to cross INR 6 billion in the current year, backed by rising demand for shrimp in the wake of dwindling supplies from other Asian countries.
The US leads the way for buyers during the Christmas and New Year season. “It is the peak season and there is increased demand. The prices are good too,’’ said Shivam Gupta, director of West Coast Fine Foods India.
The Tasmanian seafood industry would be the winner of a voluntary trial for country of origin labelling, says Labor Braddon candidate Justine Keay.
She announced a Shorten Labor government would work with the state government to develop a two-year, voluntary pilot program in Tasmania to trial country of origin labelling on menus to indicate if seafood is imported or is Australian.
Ms Keay said if in power Labor would invest $500,000 and that the trial would commence in 2020 and apply only to Tasmania.
The Texas shrimp industry is celebrating a handful of recent legislative wins while also dreading next year’s shrimp season if changes aren’t made to the seasonal foreign worker visa program.
The Brownsville-Port Isabel shrimp fleet starts this season, which opens today, without enough workers. Andrea Hance, executive director of the Texas Shrimp Association, estimates that 70 percent of the fleet’s 140 trawlers will head out to the Gulf shorthanded.
That usually means having to do without headers, the crew members tasked with removing the shrimp heads before they are frozen at sea. Hance said headless shrimp bring $1 to $1.50 more per pound at the dock compared to shrimp with heads.
LÝ SON — The central province of Qu?ng Ngãi has allocated funds of VNÐ42 billion to support ecosystem recovery and biodiversity supervision as well as strengthening the protection of the Lý Son Marine Protected Area (MPA) for the 2018-22 period.
The province said the funds will be used to rebuild coral reefs and sea weed and aquatic species, raise awareness among community members of the need for marine protection and supporting fishermen living in the core zone of strict protected area in the MPA in changing their livelihoods.
The fund will also aim to conserve over-exploited unique seafood products including abalone, holothurian, giant clam and pearl that are threatened with extinction.
SAMBALPUR - The Fisheries department has planned to stop supply of fish produced in Hirakud Dam Reservoir (HDR) here to Kolkata after restriction is imposed on its import from Andhra Pradesh.
The department has taken the decision to meet the demand of the region and provide fresh fish from the HDR to local residents.
Informing this, Deputy Director of Fisheries, Sambalpur Zone Pabitra Kumar Behera said about 15, 000 tonne fish is produced from the Hirakud Reservoir annually of which 7,000 tonne is sent to Kolkata. The brokers purchase the fish from fishermen of HDR and transport it to Kolkata instead of selling it in local markets to make extra bucks, he said.
SHILLONG - Meghalaya is awaiting the test result of fish to see whether there is an element of formalin.
Meghalaya had sent the samples of fish for testing after the neighbouring states, Nagaland and Manipur banned the import of fish citing health hazards.
Though Meghalaya had not banned the import of fish, there is panic in the market over the move on the part of the state government to send the samples for testing. Earlier, Fisheries Minister Comingone Ymbon said that the state government will request the Centre to provide kits to test the fish.
Bhubaneswar - The Health & Family Welfare Department on Monday directed the public health officers-cum- designated officers of all the districts to collect samples of fish from their respective areas for quality testing.
In a letter, the Commissioner of Food Safety has asked the designated officers to instruct the concerned food safety officers to collect random fish samples from the local market and packets in ice–containers for laboratory testing.
The food safety officers have been directed to send the collected samples to the State Food Testing Laboratory in Bhubaneswar for quality check.
Bhubnaeswar - The state's largest fish market - the Unit-IV fish market - here is running into losses after traces of cancer-causing formalin was found in fish samples on Friday.
Traders at the Unit-IV market said on Sunday that the sale of fish has declined by about 70 per cent. The fish traders have decided to put a ban on sale of marine fish for 10 days from Monday to make up for the losses.
A fish trader at the market said that while 60 tonnes of fish were sold there on last Wednesday, the sale dipped to around 15 tonnes on Sunday. The market caters to the city residents and also hotels in and around Bhubaneswar. As many as 39 wholesalers and more than 200 traders do their business in the market.
India possesses 2.4 per cent of the global land area and sustains 17.74 per cent of the world population. In India fish farming is a flourishing sector and a very important economic activity. This sector engages over 14.50 million people at the primary level. This sector transformed from traditional to commercial scale and has led to 11- fold increase in just six decades i.e. from 7.5 lakh tonne in 1950- 51 to 107.95 lakh tonne during 2015-16. This sector registered an overall annual growth rate of about 4 per cent. This sector has contributed around 0.91 per cent to the National Gross Domestic Production (GDP) and 5.23 per cent to the agricultural GDP (2014-15).
Besides meeting the national protein demand and livelihood, fisheries also earn foreign exchange to the tune of US$ 5.51billion (2014-15). This justifies the importance of this sector on the country’s food, economy and livelihood security. India constitutes about 6.30 per cent of the global fish production and 5 per cent of global trade. India has attained the second largest fish producing and second largest aquaculture producing nation in the world. This sector has been named as the “Blue revolution”.
Considering the limited scope of the capture fisheries from coastal waters and natural inland waters like rivers and estuaries, emphasis on aquaculture and culture based fisheries from reservoirs and floodplain wetlands has been given to meet the targeted fish requirement of 8.3 million tons by 2020.

Don Thompson, chairman of the Jersey Fishermen’s Association, said he believed that his industry was likely to face tougher trade restrictions with the EU whichever form of Brexit happened. However, a harder option would be preferable as the Island would be freed from EU control, new export markets around the world would open up to the Island post-Brexit and Europe would lose out if it tried to restrict imports from the Island as part of a new trade deal.
Mr Thompson, who was a vocal Leave supporter before the 2016 referendum on EU membership, said that nothing had happened to change his opinion on Brexit and he would favour as much independence from the EU as possible.
‘Post-Brexit the UK and, by default, the Channel Islands will become an independent coastal state with control over its fisheries resource, albeit here we are stuck with the Granville Bay Agreement which will continue to provide access to the French [to Channel Island waters],’ he said.
