Korean authorities have decided to grant Sri Lanka LKR 375 million (USD 2.4 million) for the development of the aquaculture sector in the country.

In the framework of the announcement, the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) has already identified the projects that would be funded by the Korean grant, online newspaper Colombo Page reported.

In addition, proposals have been submitted for establishing an industrial zone for the production of shrimp and fish-based products.

Further aid will be provided by the Korean National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives to set up a fishery village consisting of 100 houses for the fishermen’s families.

The entity has also agreed to donate two fisheries technical colleges and one technical college will be established in the North while the second will be established in the South.

Besides, Korea has agreed to construct multipurpose fisheries harbours in Udappuwa, Chalai, Madagal, Delft and Tangalle and to do the feasibility studies as well as the planning free of charge.
