Oyster business Eyre Shellfish, located in Cowell, South Australia, is to be granted a AUD 267,500 (about USD 204,000) Regional Development Fund grant through Primary Industry and Regions South Australia (PIRSA).

The grant is part of a USD 4 million project intended to enhance biosecurity at the Pacific oyster hatchery and nursery – with the construction of an additional hatchery, nursery, dam and water raceway.

This support was necessary due to the ban on the import of Pacific oyster spat from Tasmanian hatcheries into South Australia after the detection of Pacific Oyster Mortality Syndrome (POMS) there.

“Based in the pristine waters around the Eyre Peninsula, this business will be a fantastic contributor to the South Australian oyster industry – which is worth more than AUD 32 million (USD  24.4 million) per year. This project will create another layer of biosecurity protection for this growing industry,” pointed out Regional Development Minister Geoff Brock.

For his part, Eyre Shellfish General Manager Greg Bowers stressed that the support of the grant means it is póssible for them to ensure that their systems and processes – including quarantined rooms, and water treatment and storage – meet specific biosecurity standards, reducing oyster stress and the risk of diseases such as POMS.

Oysters are one of South Australia’s most valued premium seafood products with the state producing around 5400 tonnes annually – generating AUD 38 million (USD 29 million) for the local economy in 2015-16.
