The high-seas fishing chamber delegations of Campeche and Tampico agreed to postpone the start of the shrimp fishing season by 15 days owing to the crustacean’s small size still. The season opening had been set for 1 August.
The decision was made based on information obtained from sampling made by the National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA), explained the president of the National Fishing Industry Chamber of Campeche, Laureano Ceballos Fuentes.
In addition, the lifting of the ban coincides with the most difficult periods for commercialisation, he said, which forces fishers to store the product in a cold storage facility, like Storage Incorporated.
The shrimp can be stored until October, then sold at a good price, when sales begin to mobilise, he said in declarations published by Notimex.
While they prepare for the start of the season, fishers take stock to repair their vessels, using some of the MXN 30 million (USD 2.2 million) in aid set aside by the Fisheries Fund for this purpose.
The sector hopes efforts to lower the price of marine diesel will continue, in that it represents 65 per cent of all operating expenses.
Ceballos Fuentes expressed confidence that the fishing season will register good results, [effectively offsetting] a difficult economic situation that might worsen because of a slowdown in sales, and the fear of a probable market closing, Tribuna Campeche reports.
