Fresh fish landings climb

Spanish ports landed 22,484 tonnes of fresh fish in August – 4.3 per cent more than in the same month of 2008 when 21,540 tonnes were registered, reveals the latest State Ports report.
In total, the 163,032 tonnes of fresh fish landed between January and August represented an increase of 13.9 per cent in terms of the 143,045 tonnes registered in the same period of 2008.
According to the report authored by this dependency of the Ministry of Development, the port of Vigo received the most landings in August, 8,914 tonnes.
The total tally at month's end amounted to 54,959 tonnes, that is, just 1 per cent less than the 55,547 tonnes landed in the same period last year.
In second place is the port of A Corunna, with 30,177 tonnes landed between January and August, 41 per cent more than the 21,396 landed in the same period of 2008.
Bay of Cadiz held third place in terms of landing volume, with 13,705 tonnes, a 16.8 per cent hike compared to the 11,728 tonnes received in the first eight months of 2008.
Furthermore, the port of Aviles received 10,868 tonnes, 16.8 per cent more than between January and August 2008; and Santander, 10,380 tonnes, 77.7 per cent more through the same period last year.
The port of Gijon was the port that registered the greatest increase in landings – 82.2 per cent, having received 5,110 tonnes in the first eight months of 2008 and 9,314 tonnes this year.
According to the latest State Ports report, the greatest drop was registered in the port of Baleares – this port received only 812 tonnes of fresh fish between January and August, 60.7 per cent less than in the first eight months of 2008, when landings totalled 2,069 tonnes.
Another port that registered an important decline in fresh fish landings was that of Ceuta: 28 tonnes were landed here, compared to 57 tonnes through August 2008, that is, 50.8 per cent less.
The decline in fresh fish landings at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife was of 31 per cent. This terminal received 2,793 tonnes, compared to 4,053 tonnes received in the same period last year.
