The Andalusian government will subsidise 50 per cent of a EUR 1 million investment to be undertaken by the farming centre Azucarera del Guadalfeo SA, of Salobrena, to boost its output.
The fish farm now boasts 36 cages of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fattening, which it will replace with larger ones of 22 metres in diameter. The change will allow for an increase in the capacity of each cage, from 150,000 to 220,000 fish.
The expansion project is expected to be developed throughout 2010.
As part of the agreement, the head of the Council of Agriculture and Fishing of the Junta de Andalucia, Clara Aguilera, issued EUR 515,000 to company executives.
The Junta works to leverage aquaculture, not only by giving economic support to projects linked to this activity, but also through collaboration in developing research through the Andalusian Agricultural and Fisheries Research and Training Institute (IFAPA), Aguilera recalled.
Andalusian authorities and researchers aim to introduce new species, like, for example, the sole (Solea spp.).
Meanwhile, the executives of Azucarera del Guadalfeo expressed their gratitude, in particular for the aid granted by the Andalusian government.
The Granada fishing sector, centred mainly in Motril, Salobrena and Castell de Ferro, will count on a group incorporated with the Aprovalle Temple Rural Development Association, Aguilera mentioned.
This initiative will have “a series of very important aid” packages from the European Union (EU) for project diversification on the Granada coast, which would amount to EUR 2.4 million through 2013, Radio Salobrena reports.
“The fishing-grounds are continually being reduced, and it is necessary to support activities like aquaculture for that reason,” the adviser added.
According to statistics furnished by the General Directorate of Customs, Spain exported 828 tonnes of seabass between January and June, 5 per cent more than in the same period of 2008, when 790 tonnes were shipped overseas.
