Authorities of Spain and Costa Rica strengthened bilateral ties in fisheries and aquaculture matters with the signing of a memorandum of understanding within the framework of the Food and Agriculture Organisation's (FAO) World Summit on Food Security, held in Rome.
The head of the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM) of Spain, Elena Espinosa, signed the agreement with the vice-minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Costa Rica, Roman Solera Andara.
By virtue of the reached agreement, the Spaniards will give technical and legal assistance towards the establishment of a Marine Reserve Network on the Costa Rican coast within the initiative of the Ibero-American Marine Reserve Network.
The two parties hope that the cooperation between both organisations contributes to sustainable development and improves the effectiveness of seafood producers.
Both countries will also promote technological exchange by means of training programmes, assistance and internships specialised for civil servants, fishers and aquaculturists.
They will also promote the joint participation in projects of research, development and develpment of production, trade, biotechnology, the aquaculture cadastre, the sustainable management of the environment and responsible fishing.
