Fishing for tuna starts in net traps in Cadiz

On Tuesday 1 May, 2012 the net traps from Cadiz -- Conil, Barbate, Zahara de los Atunes y Tarifa – started their 2012 tuna fishing season by catching more than 200 specimens.
In this regard, the managing director of the Net Trap Fish Producers Organisation (OPP-51), Marta Crespo, said the net trap fishermen feel satisfied with the good weather conditions accompanying them since they started the fishing season.
Fishermen are expected to reach "the 657 tonne quota assigned to Cadiz net traps within days," according to EFE agency.
On the first day, the net trap of Zahara de los Atunes captured 71 specimens and that of Tarifa, 94 tuna specimens.
Meanwhile, on the second day fishermen from Tarifa caught 50 tuna specimens.
"We have seen an increase in fish abundance," noted Crespo. And he said that it "may be a clear indicator of the recovery process the species is undergoing."
As soon as the tuna quota is reached, a group of observers appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (Magrama) will participate in the Tuna Scientific Centre and will be in charge of watching, counting and assessing "whether or not there is an increase in the number of tuna specimens and in their size," he indicated.
Fishermen from the net traps are also awaiting a response from the European Commission (EC) and from the Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) in order to install fattening farms next to the net traps this season.
The main objective is to diversify the activity and increase the business related to tuna, Diario de Cadiz reported.
