Nofima, Alltech partner to research algae in fish feed

Nofima Mat, the Norwegian Institute of Food, Fisheries and Aquaculture Research, has entered into a strategic partnership with animal health and nutrition giant Alltech to develop feed for aquaculture.
Alltech wants to reach a turnover of USD 4 billion, and a way to get there is to boost efforts in aquaculture and engage in long-term research collaboration with the foremost institutions in the world, stated Alltech Research Director Karl Dawson.
“The salmon industry faces challenges that require the industry to cooperate with researchers who work with long-term solutions. This agreement enables us to intensify work on alternative feed sources, which is the salmon industry's biggest challenge,” Dawson elaborated.
In particular, the collaboration will focus on the use of microalgae in diets for farmed fish. Alltech Algae in Kentucky, US is one of the largest algae factories in the world, and where scientists take on extensive research to find solutions for the use of algae in animal feed.
“Norwegian researchers have unique expertise in aquaculture, and we look forward to working with world class environment in pursuit of our innovative solutions for the aquaculture industry,” Dawson said about Nofima.
The research alliance seeks to further contribute to the understanding of microalgae in modern feed formulations and their role in health, performance and flesh quality in fish. The research will be carried out in six of Nofima’s research centres situated in Tromsø, Bergen, Stavanger, Ås, Sunndalsøra and Averøy, AllAboutFeed reports.
For Nofima itself, the collaboration comprises an important step in its efforts to increase cooperation with leading Norwegian and international industry players. The agreement with Alltech extends over several years, ensuring that the parties’ collaboration will help develop the industry and make forward strides in the world of fish feed.
Alltech is a global leader in the animal health and nutrition industry which employs more than 2,800 people in 128 countries. The company is headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, US.
