The Director General of Fisheries Resources and Aquaculture of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment, Jose Miguel Corvinos, met in Seville with the Director General of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the autonomous government of Andalusia, Margarita Perez Martin, and the fisheries sector of the blackspot seabream, to analyze the situation of the fleet that is dedicated to this fishery, in a context of worrying biological situation of the stock.

During the meeting, the attendees, including the representatives of the fleets included in the Seabream Fishing Plan, assessed the possible actions to be taken following the homologation of the size of the blackspot seabream (Pagellus bogaraveo) at 33 centimetres, for both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

The increase in size for the blackspot seabream, which will lead to a reduction of catches by the fleet, is considered necessary for the recovery of the species, on which more than 90 artisanal-type vessels integrated into the Seabream Fishing Plan depend economically.

On the other hand, throughout 2017 the delegated act of the Commission will enter into force. Through this act the landing obligation for all the blackspot seabream captured in Atlantic waters will be implemented. This advanced measure for the implementation of the principles contained in Article 15 of Regulation 1380/2013, which establishes the Common Fisheries Policy, will imply a change in the way the fishing activity of this species is carried out by the sector.
