Groundfish exports fall by 21pc

Exports of groundfish including clipfish, salted fish and stockfish totalled NOK 651.3 million (EUR 88.8 million) in July. This is a reduction of 21 per cent compared to July 2011, according to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC).
Exports of both fresh and frozen products experienced a decline, while exports of Norwegian clipfish, cod and salted fish showed growth.
Exports of clipfish in July totalled NOK 227.7 million (EUR 31 million), a decline of NOK 12 million (EUR 1.6 million) or 5 per cent from July last year. The total volume of clipfish exports was 6,105 tonnes, down by 593 tonnes from July last year.
The value of exports of Norwegian cod clipfish in July totalled NOK 118 million (EUR 16.1 million), up from NOK 109 million (EUR 14.9 million) in the same month last year. The volume of exports grew from 2,149 tonnes in July last year to 2,513 tonnes in July this year, an increase of 25 per cent.
Exports of Norwegian saithe clipfish fell from NOK 112.9 million (EUR 15.4 million) in July last year to NOK 91.7 million (EUR 12.5 million) in July this year. Portugal was the biggest market for Norwegian clipfish in July, with exports up by NOK 11.8 million (EUR 1.6 million) to a total of NOK 82.7 million (EUR 11.3 million), equal to growth of 18 per cent. Brazil, the second biggest market, saw the value of exports in July fall from NOK 54.8 million (EUR 7.5 million) to NOK 39.1 million (EUR 5.3 million), a decline of 29 per cent.
The value of exports of salted fish, both whole and filleted, totalled NOK 39.2 million (EUR 5.3 million) in July. This is an increase of NOK 14 million (EUR 1.9 million) compared to the same month last year. Exports to Portugal showed the biggest growth, up from NOK 12.2 million (EUR 1.66 million) to NOK 27.9 million (EUR 3.8 million), equal to a growth rate of no less than 119 per cent.
The first sales month of the year for stockfish saw the value of exports total NOK 37.9 million (EUR 5.2 million), an increase of NOK 5.9 million (EUR 804,419) or 18 per cent compared to July last year. Exports of Norwegian cod stockfish from Lofoten to Italy were valued at NOK 17 million (EUR 2.3 million) in July, compared to NOK 20.6 million (EUR 2.81 million) in July last year.
Exports of this year’s stockfish to Italy were priced at NOK 140.20 (EUR 19.12) per kg, compared to NOK 136.08 (EUR 18.55) per kg in July last year. The volume of exports to Italy in July totalled 121 tonnes, compared to 151 tonnes in July last year.
Nigeria, the biggest export market for stockfish in terms of volume, saw exports increase in value from NOK 9.3 million (EUR 1.3 million) in July last year to NOK 16.5 million (EUR 2.2 million) in July this year. The volume of exports, including stockfish of Norwegian saithe, torsk, haddock and cod, increased from 183 tonnes in July last year to 215 tonnes in July this year.
Compared to July 2011, exports of frozen groundfish fell in July this year by NOK 70.3 million (EUR 9.6 million) to a total of NOK 249 million (EUR 33.95 million). The export value in July of frozen whole fish fell by NOK 61.6 million (EUR 8.4 million) to a total of NOK 192.8 million (EUR 26.3 million); frozen whole Norwegian saithe was down by NOK 17.6 million (EUR 2.4 million), frozen whole Norwegian cod was down by NOK 15.2 million (EUR 2.1 million) and frozen whole redfish was down by NOK 17 million (EUR 2.3 million) compared to the same month last year. Also in July, exports of frozen fillet products declined by NOK 8.3 million (EUR 1.1million) to a total of NOK 55.6 million (EUR 7.6 million).
China remains the biggest market for frozen Norwegian groundfish products, despite a reduction in the value of exports from NOK 91.6 million (EUR 12.5 million) in July last year to a total of NOK 55 million (EUR 7.5 million) in July this year.
From July 2011 to July 2012, exports of fresh groundfish products from fishery fell in value by NOK 25 million (EUR 3.4 million) to a total of NOK 83 million (EUR 11.3 million). Exports of fresh whole fish in July declined in value by NOK 21.6 million (EUR 2.9 million) to a total of NOK 70 million (EUR 9.5 million). Exports of fresh fillets in July were down in value from NOK 16.3 million (EUR 2.2 million) to a total of NOK 13 million (EUR 1.8 million).
Exports of Norwegian cod were down, while exports of haddock fillets were up. Growth was seen in exports of fresh products to France and the UK, while Denmark accounted for the biggest decline.
Exports of groundfish products from aquaculture continue to decline. The value of exports in July totalled NOK 15.1 million (EUR 2.1 million), a reduction of NOK 10.8 million (EUR 1.5 million) compared to July last year. The biggest decline in value was in exports of farmed whole Norwegian cod, which fell from NOK 15.7 million (EUR 2.1 million) in July last year to a total of NOK 9.3 million (EUR 1.3 million) in July this year.
