The Government of Galicia defends the need to improve conditions on board ships to promote more incorporations to the fishing activity.

This was stated in Vigo by Undersecretary of Marine Affairs Rosa Quintana during her visit to the new trawler Marbella, of the Vigo fishing company Pesquera Áncora, which joins the Galician fishing fleet.

The head of the Undersecretariat of Marine Affairs stressed that this vessel is an example of this commitment to improving the conditions on board, given that its large tonnage generates a space that favours the improvement of habitability and safety on board, as well as the comfort of the crew.

In this sense, Quintana pointed out that it is an example of what Galicia demands from the European Union: to have new ships in which habitability is not considered part of the fishing capacity because it has no influence on the catch activity but on safety and comfort.

This aspect, she said, is exposed in the opinion on the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund after 2020, led by Galicia with the president of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, at the head, and under the commission of the European Committee of the Regions (CdR).

She also stressed that the incorporation of Marbella to the activity is a sign that Galicia is reversing the trend of reducing the fleet presented by the EU. In this regard, she noted that the level of the Galician fishing fleet is stabilizing.

Marbella trawler is 86 metres long and has a gross tonnage of 4,290 GT, and will be dedicated to the capture of cod in the Barents Sea and the NAFO area. It has a capacity to process between 20 and 25 tonnes of fillets per day and has large cabins, Wi-Fi, dining room, gym, sauna, audiovisual room and bridge room similar to that of an oceanographic ship.
