The Norwegian Fisheries Directorate has rejected Marine Harvest Norway’s (MHN) application for six development licenses to produce salmon on a bulk vessel.

The application had been presented in June 2016 to implement a 'skipet' concept plan and to convert the scrapped bulk carrier belonging to a closed fish farm where the tanks would be used for salmon production, Reuters reported.

The idea was to use six tanks in total to produce about 158,000 salmon in each one.

The government entity explained that to be awarded a license under the scheme, companies must show that their plans bring technological innovation while also adhering to strict environmental and animal welfare procedures.

The Fisheries Directorate argued that the whereas the application deadline for the development of licenses expired on November 17 2017, Marine Harvest’s documentation was received on March 1, 2018, and thus, it could not consider this new application and had to reject it.

Marine Harvest believes that the concept is beneficial since it is based on the reuse of existing ships that have been strengthened and designed for the open sea.

Another advantage of the concept is, according to MHN, is escape clearance and control of emissions due to the fact that the tank has physical walls.

Marine Harvest stated that the ship to be used is an unspecified Panamax class bulk carrier, which would be taken to Florø so that it would be converted to a fish farm.
