Atlantic and Pacific salmon exports on the rise

Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 02:50 (GMT + 9)

Statistics of the National Customs Service of Chile (Customs) indicate that the aquaculture-fishing industry was one of the biggest contributors to the increase in the country's non-mining exports.

This sector performed shipments for USD 240 million in August 2012 and contributed 0.7 percentage points to this growth, specifies the latest Monthly Report from Foreign Trade of Customs.

It has been stated that 54 per cent of this total accounted for shipments of salmon -- USD 129 million -- and 23 per cent of shipments of trout.

"Considering both products, the growth in shipments of Atlantic and Pacific salmon was more important this month: USD 16 million more than in August last year," the report added.

This contribution of the salmon sector was due to higher physical shipments of salmon: in August 45 per cent more was shipped than in 2011, that is to say, just over 6,000 additional tonnes, Aqua reported.

Meanwhile, the revenue generated by trout exports fell by 19 per cent in the eighth month of 2012. According to Customs, this result is partly explained by the reduction of the stated average price, so in August, the amount from the shipments of this product totalled about USD 13 million less than in the same month of 2011.

On the other hand, the shipments of refrigerated or frozen horse mackerel abroad in August 2012 fell by 66 per cent over the eighth month last year.

The entity clarified that the exports of horse mackerel contributed USD 9 million less than in August 2011 and 6,000 tonnes less.

Japan was the main export destination for trout, with 66 per cent of participation in the shipped amount, while 50 per cent of the exported salmon was directed to the US market. Further back was located Brazil, with 16 per cent of the share.

Meanwhile, the shipments of horse mackerel were mainly destined to Nigeria (72 per cent) and Peru (17 per cent).
