Seaweed prairie management plan encouraged

In units of the University of Magallanes (Umag), a red seaweed (Gigartina skottsbergii) re-stocking project was presented on the coast of Tierra del Fuego, in accordance with the provisions of Act No. 20.560, relating to management mechanisms of artisanal fisheries.

The presentation of the seaweed Prairie Management Plan was attended by the authorities of the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca), of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca), of the Production Development Corporation (Corfo), of the Navy of Chile, and representatives of Porvenir three unions of artisanal fishermen, representatives of seaweed processing plants and academic professionals from the University (performing entity).

During the meeting, the leaders expressed their intention to participate in this initiative, which could become a major economic alternative, Subpesca reported.

All the attendees agreed to initiate actions for the implementation of the first territorial management plan in the region of Magallanes.

Soon, there will be a meeting called by the three unions of the province, who shall forward the agreements achieved to the Zonal Fisheries and Aquaculture Directorate.

Then, Subpesca will issue the corresponding rules formalizing the board and their representatives, and later, the Plan will be implemented.

The Act No. 20,560 provides for the possibility of carrying out benthic management plans in areas that are open, forming public-private boards responsible for designing, proposing and monitoring the management, research and capturing agreements that are reached through a local participatory process.
