The National Association of Manufacturers of Canned Fish and Shellfish (Anfaco-Cecopesca) and the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO) signed a cooperation agreement to promote and strengthen quality assurance and food security.
Anfaco general secretary, Juan Vieites Baptista de Sousa, who travelled to Rome with a delegation from Anafaco-Cecopesca, participated in the meeting to sign the agreement.
The main objectives of the agreement between the two entities are the following:
- Build and strengthen quality assurance and food security in order to promote consumption and strengthen consumer confidence in fisheries and aquaculture products;
- Contribute to the development of research projects, technological development and innovation in the field of security and quality of fishery and aquaculture products so as to contribute with the results to the benefit of society in general;
- Promote the organization of conferences, seminars, talks, and such activities that contribute to improve, strengthen and consolidate the image of the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
The areas of collaboration will focus on two aspects: public and institutional initiatives; and cooperation.
With respect to the initiatives, the two parties agreed to promote and advocate for the fight against hunger through broad support for awareness campaigns intended to make the public opinion and the Spanish society sensitive to issues like this one.
Further, they will undertake and promote the full potential of a series of initiatives to inform and sensitize the public about the problem of food insecurity and the struggle against hunger and poverty. They will also support or jointly organized solidarity campaigns to raise awareness, sensitize and gather funds for FAO initiatives.
FAO and Anfaco said they "want to establish a strong partnership to define, design and implement cooperation programmes that can help improve the lives of disadvantaged populations and open development prospects," Anfaco informed.
