ADEX urges the Government to solve conflict in Paita

The president of the Association of Exporters (ADEX), Juan Varilias Velásquez, asked the National Executive to solve the indefinite strike that has taken place since last Monday, which affects the fishing industry in Paita, Piura.

In addition, as part of their protest, strikers blocked access and exit roads of the town, harming the production and export of various products.

"The strike organised by artisanal fishermen, which was later joined by dockworkers is directly affecting foreign trade," explained Varilias Velásquez.

"Our partners operating in the north of the country have made reference to the fact that they can neither export nor receive inputs for their production process," he added.

The delays in shipments also cause failures in delivery and penalties from customers, ADEX reported.

And some companies face problems as they are incapable of performing customs procedures and phytosanitary certificates.

Furthermore, the export sector of fish for direct human consumption (DHC) is being harmed with this work stoppage because companies can not receive raw material for the production of canned fish, explained the leader of ADEX.

"As we have been told, the supply of anchovy for human consumption was stopped by the artisanal fleet. Besides, they had to cancel the purchase of imported tuna for canning, both products with strong demand in the international market, generating a negative impact on the employment of approximately 450 people per day," he stated.

Moreover, the president of ADEX rejected and condemned all acts of violence and urged the government to implement measures for the country to recover the state of order.

A fish exporter assured that "losses are worth millions."

According to the figures provided by the Department of Commercial Intelligence of ADEX, 6 per cent of the total Peruvian exports was dispatched in the port of Paita in 2011 for more than USD 2,930 million.

Some of the fishery products that were sent abroad were squid, fishmeal and scallops.
