Pangasius exports are expected to reach their target for 2012 after the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) predicted a strong fourth quarter.
September is traditionally when importers increase orders to satisfy demand ahead of the holidays, said Truong Dinh Hoe, the association's general secretary.
Demand for Vietnamese tra catfish is forecast to jump 40-50 per cent by the European Union (EU), 27-30 per cent by the US and 30-40 per cent by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.
The US, the EU and ASEAN currently consume 59 per cent of the region’s total Vietnamese catfish exports. This year the Mekong Delta region has produced 833,000 tonnes of pangasius, VNA reports.
VASEP has estimated that tra fish exports for the third quarter rose by 12 per cent to USD 480 million, making it feasible for Vietnam to hit its yearly tra export target of USD 1.8 billion - USD 2 billion comfortably, Hoe said, VNS reports.
Still, the export value in the first eight months of the year fell by 0.5 per cent to USD 1.15 billion year-on-year. During that period, the US accounted for 22 per cent of the country's total tra exports, representing a year-on-year increase of 35 per cent to USD 254.4 million.
Meanwhile, the export value of tra to the EU skid by 20.1 per cent to USD 291.6 million year-on-year due to reduced demand.
Brazil and Saudi Arabia saw huge export increases for the first eight months of 2012 at 226 per cent and 177.5 per cent, respectively, compared to the same period of 2011, though each market only accounted for 4 per cent of worldwide tra exports.
According to date gathered by Vasep in cooperation with Vietnam Customs, Vinh Hoan Corp remained the leader in pangasius export in Vietnam in the first seven months of 2012, with a total of USD 85.69 million of revenue. Hung Vuong Corp ranked second with more than USD 65.5 million.
These companies are followed by Agifish in the third spot with USD 56.88 million and Anvifish Co in the fourth place with revenues of USD 49.7 million. Lagging far behind, in the fifth spot in NTSF Seafoods with USD 33.04 million and Navico in the sixth place with USD 31.7 million.
