Fresh fish landings level off

Spanish ports landed 20,222 tonnes of fresh fish in September – 2.3 per cent less than in the same month last year when 20,696 tonnes were registered, reveals the latest State Ports report.
In total, the 183,702 tonnes of fresh fish landed between January and September represented an increase of 12.1 per cent in terms of the 163,741 tonnes registered in the same period of 2008.
According to the report authored by this dependency of the Ministry of Development, the port of Vigo received the most landings in September: 7,943 tonnes.
The total tally at month's end amounted to 62,902 tonnes, that is, just 1.2 per cent less than the 63,677 tonnes landed in the first nine months of 2008.
In second place is the port of A Coruña, with 34,606 tonnes landed between January and September, 39.3 per cent more than the 24,828 landed in the same period of 2008.
Bay of Cadiz held third place in terms of landing volume, with 15,543 tonnes, a 15.1 per cent hike compared to the 13,495 tonnes received in the first nine months of 2008.
Furthermore, the port of Aviles received 11,704 tonnes, 13.9per cent more than between January and September 2008; and Pasajes, 11,661 tonnes, 35.4 per cent more through the same period last year.
The port of Gijon was the port that registered the greatest increase in landings – 76.1 per cent, having received 5,416 tonnes in the first eight months of 2008 and 9,538 tonnes this year.
According to the latest State Ports report, the greatest drop was registered in the port of Baleares – this port received only 846 tonnes of fresh fish between January and September, 63.5 per cent less than in the same period of 2008, when landings totalled 2,323 tonnes.
Another port that registered an important decline in fresh fish landings was that of Almeria: 2,228 tonnes were landed here, compared to 3,374 tonnes through September 2008, that is, 33.8 per cent less.
The decline in fresh fish landings at the port of Alicante was of 27.3 per cent. This terminal received 403 tonnes, compared to 555 tonnes received in the same period last year.
