Mainstream now heads salmon exporters’ ranking
CHILE
Friday, October 05, 2012, 23:50 (GMT + 9)
Between January and August 2012, Chile exported 312,304 tonnes of salmon, 34 per cent more than in the same period of 2011, when 232,946 tonnes had been sent, according to a report issued by InfoTrade.
In value terms, in the first eight months of salmon exports, USD 2,020.2 million was generated in revenue, a 10.2 per cent increase on the same period of 2011, when USD 1,832.5 million was totalled.
During that period, Mainstream Chile was the largest salmon exporting company in the country, followed by Empresas AquaChile and Salmones Multiexport, among others.
This leadership is partly a consequence of the agreement reached by Cermaq ASA --owner of Mainstream Chile -- to acquire all shares of the Chilean aquaculture company Cultivos Marinos Chiloé for USD 110 million.
The new ranking of exporters indicate that Mainstream has snatched the first position from Empresas AquaChile after many months of supremacy of the latter, as it is stated in InfoTrade report published by Aqua.
In the first eight months of 2012, Mainstream recorded sales for USD 134.6 million, which added to USD 70.9 million from Cultivos Marinos Chiloé totalled USD 205.5 million.
Meanwhile, Empresas AquaChile, grouping AquaChile, Aguas Claras and Salmones Chiloé, recorded sales for USD 202.3 million.
Then Salmones Multiexport was located, with sales for USD 151.4 million; and further back was Marine Harvest, with USD 131 million; and Los Fiordos, with USD 104.4 million.
Up to August 2012 the export volumes of the major salmon companies were:
- Empresas AquaChile: 33,219 tonnes;
- Mainstream: 31,978 tonnes;
- Marine Harvest: 20,102 tonnes;
- Los Fiordos: 19,218 tonnes;
- Salmones Multiexport: 18,799 tonnes.
The average price of salmon was USD 6.47 per kilogram while between January and August 2011 it was USD 7.87.
