The Undersecretary of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Region of Murcia has set a temporary closure for the purse seine fleet from December 6 to January 7.

During this period, the fleet will remain moored in port in order to facilitate the recruitment of target species and favour a greater number of breeding fish during 2018.

The Murcian purse seine fleet comprises 19 vessels, most of which are located in the port of Mazarrón, and are engaged in fishing small pelagic species such as sardine, anchovy, horse mackerel, mackerel, sprat and starling.

This fleet generates more than 150 direct jobs on fishing boats. During 2016, it captured 2,630,206 kilos, with a turnover exceeding EUR 4,094,000, of which the anchovy accounted for just over 974,000 kilos, with a value of EUR 2,866,000.

In 2018 a call for aid will be performed to cover the economic losses associated with the closure of the fishery. Shipowners and sailors will be able to benefit from the public aids that are arbitrated by the Operational Program of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, which are already included in the draft of the Community budgets.
