In order to promote the sustainable octopus capture and protect the resource during the peak reproduction period, the Undersecretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) announced a temporary fishing ban for this cephalopod in the bay of Los Angeles, Baja California.

The fishing restriction affects the California two spot octopus (Octopus bimaculatus) and the Hubb's octopus (Octopus hubbsorum) in the geographic area of Bahía de los Ángeles Biosphere Reserve, Canales de Ballenas and Salsipuedes, Baja California.

The temporary closure will be implemented in the following periods:

  • For the California two spot octopus, the fishing restriction will be implemented from November 8 to 30, 2017; and from 2018, the closure will be established from August 1 to November 30 of each year.
  • For the Hubb's octopus the entry into force of the fishing restriction will be from November 8 to 30 of this year; and from 2018, the closure will be implemented from September 1 to November 30 of each year.

SAGARPA points out that this measure was determined based on the results of the recent biological-fishery evaluations of these octopus species in Bahía de los Ángeles, Baja California, conducted by the National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA).

The octopus fishery is one of the most sustainable one in the country and of great commercial value for Mexican fishermen.
