Fish produced in Espíritu Santo to be certified

The National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro), the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) and the Support Service for Micro and Small Enterprises (Sebrae) signed an agreement to begin the certification of fish produced in micro and small companies from Espíritu Santo.
The choice of the Brazilian state is due to the fact that it is considered a reference in tilapia production in the country.
The parties involved in the project hope that the initiative allows the certification of the activity as to sustainability and security for the consumer, among others.
According to the Sebrae National Project Coordinator for Aquaculture and Fisheries, Newman Costa, small producers that obtain the certification will gain credibility.
In addition, their products will be competitive and opportunities for sale growth will be enhanced.
"Inmetro certified products will make it easier for small producers to market the fish and to be inserted more and more in the market. This means income generation and development for the region," Costa explained.
The project plans to open offices such as the one in Espíritu Santo throughout Brazil.
The data collected will form the basis for the development of certification standards.
Later, Sebrae technicians will review that information and the document will be available for public consultation, the Service reported.
