60 per cent growth of fish oil exports

  (MEXICO, 12/2/2011)

The National Health Service, Food Safety and Food Quality (Senasica) and the Federal Commission for Protection Against Health Risks (Cofepris) ensure that aquaculture health is a public good that triggers the sector’s economic development and protects consumers’ health.

In this regard, Senasica Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture Health, Mauricio Flores Villasuso, said that so far in 2011 38,170 tonnes of fish oil have been exported, that is to say, nearly 60 per cent more than last year, when 23,975 tonnes were sent abroad.

He also indicated that in 2011 a total of 70,295 tonnes of fishmeal was exported to different markets.

Flores Villasuso also indicated that to boost fishery and aquaculture product production and marketing, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpa) -- through Senasica – has invested MXN 82,197,000 (USD 6 million) in the field of aquaculture and fish health so far in 2011.

The authority issued 639 certificates for the sale of fish oil and 491 for fishmeal sales.

During the year 2,652 certificates were issued for the export, import, quarantine units, establishments in operation and national mobilization.

In addition, this year Mexico has traded fish oil and fishmeal in 25 countries: Canada, Chile, China, Cyprus, Colombia, Cuba, Spain, US, Philippines, France, Ghana, Great Britain, Greece, Guatemala, Holland, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Lithuania, Malaysia, Peru (samples), Taiwan, Turkey and Vietnam.

Furthermore, as part of the First Economic Forum of Fisheries and Aquaculture, conducted last week, the director general of Economic Studies from Cofepris, Ricardo Cavazos Cepeda, assured that one of the functions of the organization is to support domestic exporters by certifying products and processes.

Today, the European Union (EU) considers Mexico as a reliable supplier of fish products.

As proof, in 2006 the American country exported 8,401 tonnes of fish resources to the EU market and in 2010, 32,843 tonnes were sold abroad.

Cofepris said tuna was the product exported to the EU showing the largest growth, from 870 tonnes in 2006 to 20,841 tonnes last year.

The octopus has also shown a significant increase, changing from 6,922 tonnes in 2006 to 9,894 tonnes last year.

Mexico has 45 establishments registered as reliable exporters to the EU and they are located in Baja California, Chiapas, Colima, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas and Yucatan.

It also has 21 refrigerating vessels from Colima and Sinaloa, which are authorized to take products to the European market, according to Sagarpa.
