Mauritanian fish exports tripled in a decade

The Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy of Mauritania, Yahya Ould Abdedayem, said last night that the fishing exports of his country have tripled in the last ten years.

The value of these exports went from 350 million dollars (310 million euros) in 2008 to more than 1,000 million dollars (886 million euros) in 2018, according to the minister in a statement from the economic capital of the country Nuadibú. , 470 kilometers from Nouakchott.

Abdedayem thus expressed itself in the opening of the scientific symposium on the evaluation of maritime reserves and the management of fishing grounds in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Mauritania.

The sector generated a total of 60,000 direct jobs in 2018 compared to 36,000 ten years earlier, said the Mauritanian minister, referring to the period of office of current President Mohamed uld Abdel Aziz, which expires in a few months.

He also said that the volumes of fish landed in the Mauritanian coast increased from 300,000 to almost 700,000 tons in the same period, and pointed out that this is a sign of sectoral integration in the economic fabric.

Organized by the Mauritanian Institute of Oceanographic and Fisheries Research (IMROP), the colloquium is held every four years in the Mauritanian capital of the country with the participation of researchers from all over the world.

New Fishing Port of Nouadhibou

Most of the fishery exports go to the European Union, with which Mauritania has signed a four-year agreement, and which was renewed in 2015.

This agreement allows European fleets to capture a total of 225,000 tonnes per year of species that include small pelagics, prawns, tuna, hake or fish of scales, in exchange for an annual counterpart of 55 million euros.
