The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) seized two industrial vessels that threw large volumes of juvenile anchovies into the sea.
The vessel skippers could face the suspension of the fishing licenses and even the possibility of being prosecuted.
The Ministry recalled that the Peruvian law expressly prohibits such practices due to the fact that they are highly predatory and polluting.
The seized boats are Creta, owned by the fishing company Exalmar; and Andes 52, of the company CFG Investment SAC.
The vessel Creta had sailed on 18 May from Huacho. The ship threw its nets the next day, but instead of collecting the obtained juvenile capture, it tossed it back into the sea, which is classified as a serious offense.
Regarding the Andes 52, PRODUCE reported that it threw the juvenile anchovies in the position of latitude 14°31,662' S and longitude 76° 27,039' W, off Punta Azua, in Ica, at a distance of 31 nautical miles.
During the fishing trip, the boat made two casts, and the inspectors of the Monitoring and Control General Directorate found that in the second one, the skipper ordered to get rid of the juvenile specimens. Thus, they began the administrative disciplinary proceedings.
Because of the seriousness of discarding juvenile anchovy at sea, PRODUCE decided to intensify the surveillance of fisheries capture through inspectors on board along the coast, among other measures.
According to ministry officials, it is the first time that vessel skippers throw juvenile anchovy into the sea in the presence of PRODUCE inspectors, "who warned about the serious harm caused at the ecological level and to the biomass of the main fishery resource of Peru."
The Supreme Decree No. 009-2013 of PRODUCE sets that discarding aquatic resources that have sizes or weights lower than those authorized is typified as a serious offense punishable with a fine equivalent to the hold capacity in m3 in ITU (tax unit).
CFG Investment and Exalmar will be able to perform their respective defense.
