The oceanographic vessel Vizconde de Eza, of the General Secretariat of Fisheries, initiated yesterday, from Vigo, the three-year Oceanographic Survey Careva 0319. The main objective is the estimation of mackerel spawning biomass, and horse mackerel egg production by the method of egg production, which will make it possible to collect information along the entire Northern Platform of the Iberian Peninsula and the Bay of Biscay.

This type of surveys intended to study ictioplacton, fish eggs and larvae are fundamental for the investigation of the main commercial pelagic species of interest for the Spanish fleet.

During the study, which will last until April 6, acoustic surveys and pelagic fishery analysis will be conducted for mackerel, to obtain biological data on mackerel and horse mackerel female, in addition to trawls with plankton nets for the study of mackerel eggs, different target pelagic species, and blue whiting larvae.

Biologists to perform 20 assessment surveys between January and July

All this information will favour the estimation of egg production in the prospective area and fecundity parameters of mackerel and horse mackerel. Once the information obtained by the scientists has been processed, it will be used in the evaluation groups from which the reports on the status of the different stocks will be produced.

This type of surveys began in the 1980s and since 1995 they have been carried out on a triennial basis, together with the Jureva survey. Both are coordinated with the Pelacus survey, which is carried out aboard the oceanographic vessel Miguel Oliver for the study of small pelagics, which makes it possible to provide information to the working groups of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).

They are part of the National Basic Data Program of the Spanish Fisheries Sector and of different international commitments for the sustainable management of the resources of the seas.

This survey is developed in coordination with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), which holds its scientific direction.
