Galicia supported modernization of seafood processing industry with EUR 260M since 2009

Between 2009 and 2016, the Xunta de Galicia, through the Ministry of Marine Affairs, allocated more than EUR 260 million for the improvement and modernization of the seafood processing industry.
This was indicated by the head of this council, Rosa Quintana, during the inauguration of the VIII Workshop of the Spanish Society of Probiotics and Prebiotics, where she also stressed the Galician government's goal to continue "stimulating the use of all available supports in this field to generate added value."
Quintana emphasized that the Xunta "will encourage the advance towards competitiveness and excellence in a double way."
This will be achieved, on the one hand, by using of high quality products for processing with a view to gourmet markets.
On the other hand, she added, with the search for added value for fishery products and discards, guiding the use of these catches with the development and use of biotechnology techniques. In this line, she stressed that for 2017, the funds destined for this purpose were increased by 10 per cent.
In addition, Quintana announced that an aid order amounting to more than EUR 18 million will be issued shortly to support small and medium-sized companies processing fisheries and aquaculture products. These contributions will help to achieve healthy and quality food and the goal of the Spanish Society of Probiotics and Prebiotics Workshop "to make of healthy food a source of health and life."
The Minister also thanked the Spanish Society of Probiotics and Prebiotics for their work in promoting research, clinical application and dissemination in the field of the use of probiotics and prebiotics in the prevention and treatment of diseases.
