Spanish fleet set higher quota for Greenland halibut and cod

The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) has increased catch quotas assigned to Spanish ships for the next year, with regards to two species: cod and Greenland halibut.
The quantity of cod which Spanish fleets will be able to catch will increase by almost 180 per cent, from 796 tonnes to 1,447 tonnes.
For Greenland halibut, the designated quota will increase from 4,396 tonnes to 4,721 tonnes.
These increases were set last Friday during the Organization's annual meeting, which was held in Halifax, Canada from 20 to 24 September.
At the meeting, it was confirmed that cod stocks had recovered in Newfoundland waters, so it was decided to increase the total allowable catch (TAC) from 5,500 tonnes to 10,000 tonnes.
In relation to Greenland halibut, the TAC which has been set for 2011 totals 17,182 tonnes.
"Given the discrepancies between the scientific assessment and perceptions emanating from the good performance of the fleet, we have adopted a new strategy of joint management between national authorities and fisheries scientists that allow for management of these stocks and for their ultimate recovery," informs the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM).
According to MARM, this management model will ensure stability of the fishery to determine any possible variation, based on scientific assessments, which would lead to annual increases of 5 per cent over the previous year's TAC. In this way, they could bring long-term viability to this crucial resource and business planning activity.
Participants included representatives from the European Union, Canada, United States, Cuba, Russia, Norway, Japan, Iceland, Korea, Ukraine, France, Faroe Islands, Denmark and Greenland.
Currently, NAFO fishing trawler freezers catch Greenland halibut, redfish, shrimp, grenadier, skate and red hake.
In addition, since 2009, two of their boats are allowed to fish for cod in those waters.
