Invertec Pesquera Mar de Chiloe (Invermar) anticipated that Calbuco volcano eruption, which occurred last week, "will entail substantial losses" for the company, which can be estimated when more records are collected.
Currently, the salmon firm estimates that due to volcanic ash, it has lost all the biomass of the fry and smolts that were in the fish farming centre located in Lago Verde, Los Lagos Region.
In addition, the eggs that were on the premises were partially destroyed, according to the information provided by the company to the Superintendency of Securities and Insurance (SVS), as an essential fact.
"In this regard, we report that the company is making and will make every effort to try to rescue those eggs that have not been destroyed or damaged," added Invermar.
The Chilean company also found the collapse of the main roof and ponds and other facilities as a result of falling material and volcanic ash.
According to the Association of Salmon Industry AG (SalmonChile), due to the eruption of Calbuco, it is estimated that in the freshwater phase, 9 per cent of Atlantic salmon fry and smolts have been lost, and 3 per cent of trout fry and smolts production.
These figures imply a loss of 21 million fish on a total of 257 million existing in this production phase.
