The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nation, Luis Basterra, participated this Saturday through a videoconference of the delivery ceremony, held in the Spanish city of Vigo, by the Authorities of the Astilleros Armón Vigo, S.A., of the ship "Mar Argentino" prior to setting sail to its permanent seat in the Port of the City of Mar del Plata, close to the facilities of the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP).

"As one of the authors of the Pampa Azul Law, as a State policy aimed at facilitating the development of marine sciences and currently as Minister of the substantive area in the administration of fisheries, it is an honor and enormous satisfaction to preside over this act today Basterra said.

"The significant investment made would not be enough if INIDEP did not have highly qualified personnel in the areas of oceanography, fishing, hydroacoustics and informatics, who have participated in the design of the ship during the stage prior to the tender held at the beginning of 2015 "continued the Minister.

Part of this staff is at the Shipyard facilities together with two Officers of the Argentine Naval Prefecture, conducting equipment tests at sea and touring the different devices and facilities as a step prior to the formal delivery of the ship in the city of Mar del Plata.

Likewise, from Mar del Plata the administrative and operational personnel related to the numerous procedures required for the transfer of the ship, are offering their effort and their accompaniment without regard to time differences or the degree of complexity of the required procedures.

In this sense, Basterra expressed "all my appreciation to the workers who intervened in this entire process, in particular to the authorities of Armón for their generosity and permanent support in the midst of this difficult situation in our countries, to the Consular representatives of Spain and Argentina for facilitating authorizations within the framework of exception, to INIDEP's scientific, technical and administrative staff. " And he added: "A construction stage that ends and the beginning of a photo: courtesy Astilleros Armonarga vida contributing to scientific knowledge and institutional growth."

Within this framework of the event, the traditional priestly blessing of the Mar Argentino ship and the image of the Virgen del Carmen Stella Maris, donated by the Argentine ambassador to Spain, Ricardo Alfonsín, took place.

Also present during the event were the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nation, Julián Echazarreta; the Argentine Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, Ricardo Alfonsín; the undersecretaries of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Nation, Carlos Damián Liberman, and of Political Coordination, Ariel Martinez; the director of INIDEP, Oscar H. Padin; the president of Astilleros Armón Vigo S.A., Laudelino Alperi Baragaño; the Special Representative for the Promotion of Argentine Business Activity in the Kingdom of Spain, Federico Polak; the Argentine Consul General in Vigo, Silvina Montenegro; the Director General of DIPROSE, Juan Manuel Fernández Arocena, and the director of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), Javier Ruiz.

About the ship "Mar Argentino"

The construction and acquisition of the Argentine Sea Vessel had as its starting point the formalization of the "Sub-execution Agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, through the Unit for Rural Change and the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development", within the framework of the Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Program.

As part of this process, the call for International Public Tender N ° 02/15 was carried out for the acquisition of a Coastal Vessel for Fisheries and Oceanographic Research, which was awarded to Astilleros Armón Vigo S.A.

The total investment for the construction of the ship was more than 7 million dollars. The funds were provided by the National State and by a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Through a vote carried out in which all INIDEP personnel participated, the ship was named "Mar Argentino". It will replace the old Captain Cánepa, built in 1964 as a fishing vessel and later modified for scientific activity, and which was decommissioned in 2019.

The "Mar Argentino" is a research vessel that will work in coastal waters. It is 36 meters long and 8.5 meters wide, and has electric diesel propulsion, a retractable keel and low noise propagation to the water. Its crew is made up of 11 crew membersnautical crew and 8 scientific-technicians.

He will be able to develop multiple fisheries research and physical, chemical and biological oceanography. It has three laboratories on the main deck (wet, multipurpose and equipment control and hydroacoustics); winches for bottom and middle water trawling; winches for oceanographic instruments and socketmid-water and bottom trawling; winches for oceanographic instruments and plankton and benthos sampling; acoustic equipment.

The ship will aim to work in coastal waters, many of which have shallow depths, where knowledge of the biological processes that occur are essential for the good management and sustainability of resources.
