The Institute of the Sea of Peru (IMARPE) began on Monday, November 18, a research cruise in order to know the current status of the giant squid or pota (Dosidicus gigas) resource, the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) reported.

The cruise will take place aboard the scientific research vessels (BIC) José Olaya Balandra and Humboldt and will last 60 days.

The BIC José Olaya Balandra will cover the north-central zone, from 40 to 200 nautical miles for a period of 35 days, while the BIC Humboldt will cover the southern zone from 40 to 200 nautical miles of the coast, for a period of 25 days, respectively.

This research activity is multidisciplinary and includes scientists and technical personnel specialized in biology, acoustics, fishing, oceanography and genetics, with the objective of estimating the abundance indexes of the giant squid from acoustic information and fishing gear.

It also seeks to determine its distribution, concentration, population structure, biological status and interrelations with the marine environment. An important component that is being incorporated into the study is the analysis of genetic variability along its latitudinal and longitudinal distribution in the Peruvian sea.

The Ministry of Production indicated that considering the importance of this resource in artisanal fishing activity, and its preponderant role in the national socio-economic context, as a source of food, labor and foreign exchange to the country, the results of this research will contribute to the analysis of fishing projections of the giant squid or pota by 2020 and its fisheries management measures that will guarantee its sustainability.
