As a result of cases like the one in Blumar a few weeks ago where more than 100,000 salmon escaped and another 700,000 remained under the sea.

A new regulation of the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) as happened a few weeks ago in a Blumar company center, in the Los Lagos Region, where more than 100,000 fish escaped and another 700,000 remain under the sea.

The standard, which will be published soon, was developed under the premise that the structures must be able to contain the fish and prevent their escape, in light of different episodes that have involved cages of this type, over time. .

The standard includes a methodology related to the measurement of the different elements (currents, winds and waves, among others) that may impact on the culture cages.

According to Subpesca, "calculation formulas and safety coefficients that must be applied in determining the quantity and dimensions of the moorings (anchoring of the structures), as well as requirements to guarantee the useful life of the cages and culture nets, will be made. ".

The same methodology determines calculation formulas and safety coefficients that must be applied in determining the quantity and dimensions of the moorings (anchoring of the structures), as well as requirements to guarantee the useful life of the cages and the culture nets.

Subpesca's new regulation is based on data gathered in a study by the Fisheries Research Fund (FIPA), the execution of which was entrusted to the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaiso.

The Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Román Zelaya, reported that the new regulations "are part of the continuous review of the regulatory requirements to which the industry must be subjected to maintain high standards of safety and environmental protection, and avoid episodes, such as the cage sinking and fish escape occurred a few weeks ago in Reloncaví ".

Finally, Zelaya highlighted the work and the inspection and sanctioning procedures that Sernapesca and the Superintendency of the Environment are carrying out, in the face of any environmental damage that may have been registered as a result of the sinking of the cages in the center of Blumar.
